Many of our courses follow an RYA syllabus. In order to gain the certificate students need to
complete the syllabus. If for
any reason (e.g. lack of wind) this appears unlikely, students will be warned
about this during the course. We
do however offer some non- certificate courses, which will improve your skills
with a more flexible syllabus.
A certain amount of water confidence is important when taking part in sailing or
indeed any other watersport. Therefore we require that all
participants should be
confident in the water wearing a buoyancy aid / lifejacket.

Juniors (Ages 9-16)
Most of the junior courses will use optimists or toppers; little people
go in oppies, bigger people go in toppers!
The RYA junior scheme is very flexible with space in the log book to get
each bit ticked off as soon as it is achieved. When all bits get ticked it is time to get a
certificate. The junior scheme
covers stages 1-4. We also offer summer holiday junior racing
courses for those who can already sail.
All junior
courses start at 10.00am and run till 4.00pm. Annual membership of
the club for juniors is £15. This is included in the price of all
junior courses. If already a member, please deduct this from your
payment.
Adults (Age 14+)
Adult courses are normally taught in wayfarers although there may be
opportunities to try other boats such as singlehanders. The wayfarer is a real thoroughbread dinghy, popular
with cruising sailors, racing sailors and also schools. It is well mannered
and seaworthy, great for taking first steps sailing, but
also for bigger adventures.
The RYA adult scheme consists of level 1 Start Sailing (similar to our
taster course), level 2 Basic Skills and then Seamanship Skills, Day
Sailing, Sailing with Spinnakers, Start Racing and Performance
Sailing. Here at Peterhead sailing club we have RYA recognition
to cover levels 1, 2, Seamanship skills and Start Racing. Maybe more in the
future! Watch this space. We also offer an improvers
course which has no specific syllabus. We will decide on the
syllabus with you and try to make it as varied and interesting as possible.
Logbooks
RYA logbooks are available from us for both the adult and junior scheme,
and are the best way of knowing what is in the syllabus, and getting the
sections recorded once you have completed them.
A course will not run if there are not enough applicants on it to make it
financially viable. We aim to
give as much warning as possible in these circumstances. We reserve the right to cancel a course due to lack of
bookings or other circumstances. In
this instance, a full refund will be given.
No refunds will be given for an individual failing to complete a course.
In the event of you requiring a cancellation, we will do our utmost to
sell your place again and if successful, a full refund will be given.
Otherwise, a 50% refund will be given for cancellations with more than 21
days notice from the start date of the course. If less than 21 days from the start date, no refund
will be given.
